Sy's Rider of the Month
Paulette shares her story:
A lot of people ask "What made you take up riding". I guess there are many reasons. Before I could remember, I was around motorcycles. As a newborn baby, I was brought home from hospital in the sidecar of my father's Indian. It was only after I was thrown through a shop window when a car hit my father's motorcycle, that he decided to buy a car.
When I was a teenager and needed convenient transport to get to university I was keen to get a motorcycle because I couldn't afford to buy and run a car, so my father drove me around the various motorcycle shops to help me choose the right one, my mother was horrified.
I joined a club to ride with other like minded people. We rode every weekend and about every second month had a weekend away camping, we had so many adventures. In January every year during Uni holidays we had a LONG trip. My first year we went up the coast to Cairns, the next year we rode across about 1000km of unsealed Nullabor to Perth, all on road bikes I might add, then the next year we rode up through outback Queensland and on to Darwin. I should tell you that most of us were on 250cc with a spattering of 500cc, seems impossible now I think back on it. We all carried spare tyres draped over one shoulder and between us had enough equipment to carry out any repair. The corrugations on the Nullabor were so bad that one bike broke its frame and after a quick temporary fix by the side of the road it limped into the next roadhouse which fortunately had welding gear.
In my mid 50's and going through "Mid Life Crisis" I decided that if I was ever going to fulfil my lifelong dream of owning a Harley, it would have to be now or never. My family no longer needed me at their beck and call and I was free on weekends to do my own thing. On the ride home from collecting my new bike it all came back to me and that feeling that only a biker can know made me realise that I had made the right decision. As the saying goes "if I have to explain it to you, you would not understand". Joining HOG was the next best decision I made. I love riding on Sunday rides and the occasional weekend away and to rallies all over the country with some of the best people in the riding fraternity.
As a female rider I have always been respected and treated well. I feel like I have lots of brothers who are looking out for me and I never feel any pressure to be as good as anyone else or prove myself. I love the reaction I often get from people who know me through business or sporting activities when they find out that I ride a Harley, it is priceless. ________________________________________________________
